Take cableways to enjoy great views

Tatra cableways offer one of the most popular ways how to discover the Tatras and make moments spent there more pleasant. They will reveal another perspective of the mountains. A perspective we are not used to. Do you like this kind of travelling? Take one of comfortable cable cars or chairlifts in the Tatras and enjoy beautiful panoramas and fresh air.

A cable car to Skalnaté Pleso

A cable car operates in the lower section from Tatranská Lomnica (903 m above sea level) to Skalnaté Pleso (1,751 m above sea level). Skalnaté Pleso is one of the most popular locations in the Tatras and a good starting point for several hiking trips. One can go to the valley of Malá or Veľká Studená dolina in the direction of Hrebienok or to Zelené pleso (tarn) across Mt. Veľká Svišťovka. Children love the eco-mini-park called Marmot Land located in the area of Skalnaté Pleso, which offers various adventures and stories of the educational trail Tatra Wilderness.

A suspension cable car to Lomnický štít

From Skalnaté Pleso, one can take a suspension cable car to get to Lomnický štít (peak) (2,634 m above sea level) and have a cup of delicious coffee on a suspension observatory terrace of the Dedo Café, visit a small natural botanical garden or an observatory. As the capacity of the cable car to Lomnický štít is lower when compared to the one from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté Pleso, visitors are advised to buy a ticket a few days in advance at ticket offices in Tatranská Lomnica or Starý Smokovec.

A chairlift to Lomnické sedlo

There is a chairlift from Skalnaté Pleso to Lomnické sedlo (saddle) (2,196 m above sea level) with a nice view from Mt. Lomnická veža and a 30-minute walk on the roof of the Tatras.

A funicular to Hrebienok

Another type of a cableway is a funicular that operates from Starý Smokovec (1,017 m above sea level) to Hrebienok (1,272 m above sea level). Hrebienok is a popular starting point for various hiking trips to waterfalls or Tatra chalets. It also offers activities such as a bike park or tubing. A funicular ride to Hrebienok takes about 7 minutes.

A chairlift to the top of Mt. Solisko

A chairlift from Štrbské pleso (1,383 m above sea level) will take you to the top of Mt. Solisko (1,814 m above sea level). One of the easiest accessible peaks offers a beautiful view of Popradská kotlina (basin) and a possibility to sleep at the Chalet under Mt. Solisko.

History of cableways

History of these cableways dates back to the 1930´s. The first cableway was built at Lomnický štít (peak). However, it was not the only candidate for a cableway. Peaks of Gerlachovský, Ľadový, Slavkovský štít and Mt. Rysy were discussed too. Thirty sherpas had carried almost 300 tonnes of material to the summit of Lomnický štít, to the altitude of 2,634 m before a temporary construction cable car was built. The construction of this cableway was supported by the director of the State Spa Tatranská Lomnica, Juraj Országh mainly.

The construction began on 8th May 1936 and a grand opening took place on 19th December 1941. The route was divided in two sections. The lower section, from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté Pleso started to operate on 22nd December 1937 with two shuttle cabins for 3 passengers and a guard. They met at the mid station Štart. The upper section was operating with one cabin only, like today. The mid station Štart was named after a nearby start of a sledge and bobsleigh track. Until today, the cableway to Lomnický štít has been used by various significant personalities of cultural and social life from all over the world.
