Mountains and hiking

There are about 600 km of marked tourist trails in the territory of the High Tatras that take the tourists to the most attractive places of this mountain region. Tourist trails leading through valleys, ascents to Tatra chalets, trails to the most beautiful tarns or a fascinating world of animals and plants.

Visit this picturesque region. You will love it.

The High Tatras are ideal for all tourists. They offer easy walks for families with children, active hiking for more demanding tourists or real challenges for those who want to reach the highest peaks.

All tourist trails designated for tourists in the Tatra National Park are marked (red, blue, green, yellow) and divided in groups according to the level of difficulty.

WALKING IN THE AREA

Less demanding tourists can make short walks of max. 2 hours. They are ideal even for families with children:

  • There is an easy and fast way how to get from the bus stop Popradské Pleso to Popradské pleso, the fourth biggest tarn in the Tatras.
  • Short but attractive trails include the one from Reiner´s chalet (the oldest chalet in the High Tatras) to the Waterfalls of Studený potok (brook).
  • There is a walk from Tatranská Lomnica to the meadows at Matliare along the lower station of the first cable car to Skalnaté Pleso.
  • Or a nice walk from Štrbské pleso (tarn) to Jamské pleso (tarn) and back.

HIKING IN VALLEYS

If you are one of more demanding tourists, you should definitely try longer hikes in valleys. Set out for tarns and chalets along marked tourist trails, embraced by a beautiful panorama of alpine nature.

  • Popular trails include the one to Wahlbergovo pleso (tarn) through Furkotská dolina (valley).
  • Or from Štrbské pleso, past Popradské pleso up to Veľké Hincovo pleso (3 tarns) past Mengusovská dolina (valley).
  • If you decide to visit Téry´s (2,015 m above sea level) or Zbojnícka (1,960 m above sea level) chalet, start in Starý Smokovec and continue through Hrebienok. A signpost at Rainer´s chalet will show you the way to the valleys of Malá or Veľká Studená dolina.
  • There is another interesting trail leading from Tatranská Lomnica, along the main road called “Cesta slobody” (Road of Freedom) up to the settlement of Tatranské Matliare, where a tourist trail to Biele and Zelené pleso (tarns) across the valley of Dolina Zeleného pleas begins.
  • Tatranská Javorina, located at the altitude of 1 km, is a starting point for a nice trip to Javorová dolina (valley). It is an 8-km long, massive, north-facing valley with several side valleys.
  • Another attractive trail leads to Litvorové pleso (tarn). It starts in the settlement of Lysá Poľana and leads through Bielovodská dolina (valley) and Poľana (clearing) under Mt. Vysoká.

ASCENTS TO PEAKS

The most demanding tourists with determination to surmount difficult terrain and great vertical drops will enjoy ascents to peaks. Many peaks are accessible with mountain guides only. Safety comes first so every ascent should be well prepared.

  • When speaking about peaks lower than 2,000 m above sea level, Kasprov vrch (1,985 m) is definitely worth climbing.
  • Predné Solisko (2,093 m) is a little above 2,000m above sea level.
  • Veľká Svišťovka (2,037 m) is accessible from Zelené pleso (tarn), the ascent doesn´t take long.
  • The ascent to Jahňací štít (2,229 m) takes a little longer and leads from Tatranská Lomnica through Tatranské Matliare, past Zelené pleso (tarn).
  • Ascents to symbols of the High Tatras - Rysy, Východná Vysoká and Slavkovský štít are rather long too.
  • The highest peak of the High Tatras, Gerlachovský štít, can be climbed with a mountain guide only. Mountain guides are united in the Association of Mountain Guides of the Slovak Republic

TATRAS WITHOUT BARRIERS

Our highest mountains have been made accessible for the physically disabled too, thanks to the State Forests of the Tatra National Park and a project called TATRAS WITHOUT BARRIERS. Eight tourist trails with the total length of more than thirty kilometres are available during the whole year. Disabled people can thus enjoy mysteries and beauties of Tatra nature along with others. Barrier-free trails are also used by families with prams. There is for example the forest road Tichá dolina (valley) in the area of Oravice, a road to Popradské pleso (tarn), a road to a gamekeeper´s lodge in Bielovodská dolina (valley), the canyon of Dunajec and others.
