Winter Closure

Give nature a break. Explore the Tatras on open trails.

Winter Closure

From November 1 through May 31, selected hiking trails in the High Tatras are closed for the season. This primarily affects high-altitude trails, access routes to mountain passes, and ascents to peaks. However, all trails leading to high-altitude mountain huts are open year-round, with the exception of Chata pod Rysmi. This allows nature to enjoy the necessary peace and quiet during the winter and the sensitive spring season.

Chamois during the fall rutting season, wild animals conserving energy in harsh winter conditions, and birds during spring nesting and rearing of their young all need peace and space free from disturbance. By respecting the closures, you help protect the Tatra Mountains’ rare wildlife and their natural habitat.

However, you can still explore the Tatra Mountains during this time of year. Choose from the open trails and tailor your trip to the weather, conditions, and your own experience.

Please read this before your visit

Which sidewalks are affected by the closure?

The closure applies to specific sections listed in the TANAP Visitor Regulations. Before setting out on your hike, check the entire route, including the descent. Even an open trail may lead you to a section where you are no longer permitted to continue.

What about access to mountain huts?

Several mountain huts are accessible even in winter, but always check access based on your specific route. The trail leading to Chata pod Rysmi is subject to closures. The blue-marked trail from Štrbské Pleso to Chata pod Soliskom is also closed seasonally.

An open trail does not mean safe terrain

Snow, ice, and wind can change conditions even on a familiar route. Before setting out, check the current warnings and assess your experience. In high-altitude terrain, it’s not enough just to have the right gear—you need to know how to use it properly.
