You can also reach the mountain resorts, for example, by taking the Tatra Electric Railway from Poprad

The region has a well-developed local transportation system consisting of local trains and buses. You can reach the mountain resorts by the Tatra Electric Railway or by bus from Poprad, or by the cog railway from Tatranská Štrba, which has a station for express trains.

Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ)

The Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) in the High Tatras provides service on the Poprad-Tatry–Starý Smokovec–Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec–Tatranská Lomnica routes . Since February 2022, new hybrid electric rack-rail trains have also been operating on these routes, though they primarily run on the Štrba–Štrbské Pleso section.

Rack-and-pinion railway

It transports passengers between the Štrba train station and serves as a major tourist gateway to the High Tatras. This is a railway in which a gear wheel meshing with a toothed rack along the track axis transmits the traction force. The rack-and-pinion railway line was renovated between 2019 and 2022, and after 50 years, the old rack-and-pinion trains were replaced by new hybrid tram-rack-and-pinion trains (Bradavica, Vysoká, Stredohrot, Kostolík, Ganek), which, in addition to the OŽ line, can also operate on the TEŽ line.

Rides on Historic Trams in the High Tatras

The historic “Kométa” and “Trojča” trams operate on TEŽ routes on select days during the summer season. A ride on a historic tram offers visitors a unique way to explore the High Tatras and learn about their transportation history. Before your trip, we recommend checking the current dates and schedule.

Travel throughout the region by bus—quickly, comfortably, and without a car

Bus service in the Tatra Mountains region (Poprad, Tatras, Svit, Kežmarok, Levoča) is provided by Slovenská autobusová doprava Poprad.

The fleet consists of nearly 180 buses marked “TATRA EXPRESS,” which provide regular bus service, primarily for commuter travel within the Prešov Self-Governing Region.

Regular bus routes also cover areas not served by the tram—including the SkiBUS for skiers during the winter season.

During the winter season, the SKI & AQUA BUS regional transit service is available for visitors and skiers, providing comfortable, free transportation to the resorts of Tatranská Lomnica, Starý Smokovec, and Štrbské Pleso.

Regular bus routes also cover areas where the tram does not stop—including the SkiBUS for skiers during the winter season.

Shuttle Service and Park-and-Ride Facilities

Leave your car at the free P+R park-and-ride lot on the grounds of the former Eurocamp below Tatranská Lomnica. Up to 450 parking spaces are available. The year-round shuttle service runs in both directions and will conveniently take you closer to hiking trails, attractions, and connecting public transportation.
