Winter hiking is, of course, different from summer hiking, especially in terms of equipment requirements and experience.

The most important things a hiker shouldn’t forget:

• • Check the weather, current snow conditions, and alerts (Tatra Information Offices, Mountain Rescue Service)

• • Pack winter gear appropriate for the current conditions and know how to use it—poles, crampons, an ice axe, and, if necessary, avalanche safety equipment

• • Purchase mountain insurance, sign the hiking and trekking logbook at your lodging facility, and inform your loved ones

Just because a trail is open doesn’t mean it’s maintained or safe. You must always assess the current conditions and your own abilities, and be prepared to turn back at any time.

Official information on the reason for the seasonal closure:
The seasonal closure of selected hiking trails in the Tatra National Park lasts from November 1 through May 31. During this period, the Tatra’s natural environment is at its most vulnerable. It is the chamois rutting season, an increased risk to chamois from disturbance in exposed avalanche-prone areas, and it also includes the sensitive spring period of nesting and rearing of young for several protected species of Tatra wildlife.

The Mountain Rescue Service is responsible for your safety in the mountains . In high-altitude environments, it is very important to follow the rules of the mountains as well as the instructions of the Mountain Rescue Service. Before setting out on a hike, we recommend checking updates on current conditions in the mountains.

And how do you find your way during a winter hike? In areas without trees, the markings on rocks are replaced by markings on poles during the winter.
