About the White and Green Balls
Tatranská Lomnica – Tatranské Matliare – Veľké Biele Lake – Zelené Lake

Length of a one-way route
A long climb without chains
Estimated walking time
From the foothills to the border between the two Tatra Mountains
The hike begins in Tatranská Lomnica at an elevation of approximately 850 meters above sea level and continues along Cesta slobody to Tatranské Matliare. From there, the trail ascends through a forest, passing the fork in the trail above Matliare and the Šalviový Spring, into the Valley of the White Lakes. As the elevation increases, the forest gradually gives way to dwarf pine and open alpine terrain.
The first major destination is Veľké Biele pleso at an elevation of 1,612 m above sea level, located on the border between the High Tatras and the Belianske Tatras. From there, the trail continues along the red-marked Tatra Main Trail past Trojrohé Lake to Zelené Lake. On its shore stands the Chata pri Zelenom plese mountain hut, open year-round, where you can grab a bite to eat, relax, or spend the night.

The time of 4 hours and 30 minutes and the distance of 12.06 km refer to the route from Tatranská Lomnica to Zelené pleso. The return trip along the same route is not included. A practical alternative is to continue from Zelené pleso to the Biela voda stop and return from there by public transportation.
The sections from Tatranské Matliare through Šalviový prameň to Veľké Biele and Zelené pleso are not listed among the trails with seasonal closures. From November 1 through May 31, the sections continuing from Veľké Biele Pleso toward Kopské Sedlo and from Zelené Pleso to Jahňací Štít or to Sedlo pod Veľkou Svišťovkou are closed. In winter, however, snow, ice, and shorter daylight hours significantly increase the difficulty of the hike.
Dogs are permitted only on the lower section between Tatranská Lomnica, Tatranské Matliare, and Šalviový prameň. You may not enter the blue-marked trail from Šalviový prameň toward Veľké Bielé pleso or the connecting high-altitude section while accompanied by an animal.
A long climb to two Tatra mountain lakes
The initial section from Tatranská Lomnica to Tatranské Matliare runs through gentler foothill terrain. Beyond Matliare, the slope gradually steepens, and the blue-marked trail continues through the forest to the Šalviový Spring. Higher up, the trail passes through a zone of dwarf pine and the more open Valley of the White Lakes all the way to the route’s highest point at Veľké Biele Pleso.
From Veľké Biele pleso, the terrain changes. The Red Tatra Main Trail follows a gently undulating and mostly descending path past Trojroh pliesko to Zelené pleso at an elevation of approximately 1,551 meters above sea level. Although the final stretch is not as physically demanding, after a long ascent, it requires allowing for sufficient time.
