Rainer's Cabin is a unique landmark in the High Tatras
A short loop trail from Hrebienok connects several of the most popular spots around Starý Smokovec. Along the way, you’ll visit Rainerova Chata, pass by the Studený Potok Waterfalls, and stop at Bilíková Chata. The hike takes you mainly through wooded areas without any long or strenuous climbs, making it suitable for families with children and less experienced hikers.
Rainer’s Chalet, located at an elevation of 1,301 meters above sea level, is the oldest and smallest chalet in the Tatras. It was built by Ján Juraj Rainer in 1863 and today offers simple refreshments, souvenirs, and a small exhibition dedicated to mountain porters and old mountaineering equipment. It does not provide lodging.
The Studený Stream, on the way to Bilíkova Chalet, flows over a dramatic drop in the terrain, creating a series of waterfalls, cascades, and rapids. These are most impressive during the spring snowmelt or after heavy rains. Bilíkova Chata is located at an elevation of 1,255 meters above sea level, just below Hrebienok, and offers a restaurant, an outdoor terrace, and lodging.

The red trail between Hrebienok and Rázcestie above Rainerova Chata will be closed for repair work starting June 1, 2026. Therefore, it is currently not possible to complete the loop in the order listed.
To reach Rainer's Cabin, set out from Hrebienok via Bilík's Cabin and the Studený Potok Waterfalls. The green-marked section has been reopened following the completion of the necessary work. Return to Hrebienok via the same route.
Part of the nature trail has been made accessible, but the section running alongside the waterfalls is rockier and not suitable for standard strollers. It is necessary to check the current accessibility of the modified sections in advance.
A trip that combines the history of the Tatra Mountains with whitewater rafting
The trail runs at an elevation of approximately 1,200 to 1,300 meters above sea level and does not involve a continuous ascent. From Hrebienok, it leads to Rainerova Chata, then descends to the area around the Studený Potok waterfalls, and from Bilíková Chata, it climbs gently again toward Hrebienok.
The lowest point is near the lower cascades of Studený Potok. The highest point is the area around the trail junction above Rainerova Chata. The elevation changes are short, but extra caution is needed on the steps, tree roots, and wet rocks.
