Short history of mountain guides
The first visitors coming to the mountains in the 16th century used services of “local experts” from settlements below the Tatras when walking in unknown and dangerous terrain. These were usually poachers, later even members of the local intelligentsia, e.g. teachers, priests and mainly professors of the Lyceum of Kežmarok, who would take their pupils to the mountains. Mountain guides, who hadn´t been registered before, got united by the so called Hungarian Carpathian Society in 1873. Today, the mountain guides are united within the National Association of Mountain Guides of the Slovak Republic.
