Rainerova chata (1 301m n. m.)

Rainer’s hut (Rainerova chata) (1,301 m) is the oldest and smallest Tatra chalet. It was built by Ján Juraj Rainer in 1863. Known as Rainerka or Rainer’s Shelter, it is located on Starolesnianska poľana (clearing) at the mouth of Malá studená dolina and Veľká studená dolina (valleys), near the popular Hrebienok resort in Malá studená dolina.

After the construction of the nearby Kamzík Hotel, Rainer’s hut served as a storeroom and occasional lodging. In 1998, it was restored and reopened by the current tenant, Peter Petras. It still operates today, offering refreshments at a buffet. Accommodation is not available here, but the chalet features an engaging exhibition on the history and present of mountain load bearers, a collection of old climbing gear, skis and many documentary photographs.

The chalet is open all year round and visitors can refresh themselves there when hiking. Every winter, the area around the chalet comes alive with a beautiful snow Nativity scene, handcrafted by chalet keeper Peter Petras.

The access to the chalet is suitable for families with children:

From Starý Smokovec via a green-marked trail: A 45-minute walk to Hrebienok. A funicular can make the ascent more comfortable. From Hrebienok, it takes 30 minutes to walk via a green-marked trail to the chalet. Along the way, you can admire the Waterfalls of the Studený potok (stream).
From Hrebienok via a red-marked trail: Approximately 25 minutes. The trail is also suitable for wheelchair users and families with prams.
