The Lomnica Loop is a pleasant option for a family walk in the foothills of the High Tatras. Starting from Tatranská Lomnica, it takes you to the meadows near Tatranské Matliare and back along the Freedom Trail. The gentle terrain allows you to adjust your pace to suit the children and gives you plenty of opportunities for short breaks or to observe the winter scenery.

Forested sections alternate with open areas, from which the surrounding peaks come into view on clear days. The walk ends back in Tatranská Lomnica, where you can rest and warm up after spending time outdoors. You can easily fit this loop into a leisurely winter morning or afternoon itinerary.

The Lomnický Circuit is one of the recommended short hikes for families with children. The estimated 90 minutes does not include longer stops or playtime during the hike. In winter, snow can slow you down, so allow extra time and adjust the length of the trip to suit the youngest participants.

Winter Conditions and Strollers

Even a gentle path can be more challenging after snowfall or when there is black ice. Whether the path is suitable for a stroller depends on the amount of snow and the condition of the surface. Check the conditions before setting out; if the ground is icy or there is deep snow, opt for a shorter walk along sections that are easier to navigate.

The Return Along the Road to Freedom

The return leg follows the sidewalk along Cesta slobody. Stay on the walking path, and pay close attention to traffic when crossing the road. Keep children close by when walking along roads, and plan your trip so that you return before dark.

Gently rolling terrain from Lomnica to Matliare

The first part of the hike leads from Tatranská Lomnica through wooded areas to the meadows near Tatranské Matliare. The trail remains in a foothill setting and does not involve a long high-altitude ascent. The gentle incline and more open areas allow for a leisurely pace and short breaks.

From the Matliare area

the loop turns back toward Tatranská Lomnica along a trail next to Cesta slobody. The hike ends at the same location where it began, so after the walk, you won’t have to worry about traveling between a distant starting point and the finish. In winter, the difficulty level is primarily influenced by the condition of the trail surface.
