The High Tatras win TRAVELBOOK AWARD 2025 – Best Hidden Gem Region in Europe

Poprad, 25th September 2025 – The High Tatras have been named the winner of the prestigious TRAVELBOOK AWARD 2025 in the Best Hidden Gem Region in Europe category. This recognition highlights that Slovakia’s mountain jewel ranks among the most exceptional yet still undiscovered destinations on the travel map of Europe.
ABOUT THE TRAVELBOOK AWARD
The TRAVELBOOK AWARD is presented annually by Travelbook.de, Germany’s largest online travel magazine. Now in their fourth year, the 2025 awards attracted nearly 150,000 reader votes to decide the winners across several categories. The category known as the Best Hidden Gem Region in Europe celebrates places that are less well-known but offer a unique combination of authenticity, beauty, and memorable experiences. The awards ceremony took place in Berlin in the prestigious journalists’ club on the 19th floor of the Axel Springer headquarters on 23rd September, with representatives of the nominated destinations in attendance.

Why the High Tatras?
The High Tatras impressed both the jury and the public with their blend of natural treasures and authentic character:
- Majestic peaks and valleys that remain accessible yet free from mass tourism
- A diverse network of hiking trails, from gentle walks to demanding alpine treks
- Unique flora and fauna, including the Tatra chamois and marmots
- Traditional mountain culture and warm hospitality of local communities
- Modern, sustainable tourism infrastructure

The award’s significance for the region
Winning the title of the Best Hidden Gem Region in Europe means more than just prestige – it opens the door to greater awareness among travellers across all Europe. Increased interest is expected particularly from Western Europe, where the TRAVELBOOK AWARD is regarded as a trusted recommendation.
“For the High Tatras, this is a great honour and confirmation that even smaller destinations can captivate the whole of Europe,” said Lucia Blašková, the Director of the Región Vysoké Tatry regional tourism organisation. “The award is also a commitment to continue developing sustainably, protecting nature, and presenting the Tatras as a place where untamed beauty meets genuine hospitality. We value it all the more because already being nominated and reaching the final was unexpected, and winning is truly the icing on the cake. The editorial team selected the finalists from strong competitors in Switzerland and Finland, and the readers themselves chose the winner, making this award especially authentic,” Blašková added.

What visitors can expect
Beyond their network of hiking trails and high-altitude adventures, the Tatras also offer wellness relaxation, cultural events, winter sports, and traditional gastronomy. Destinations such as Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, Poprad, and Smokovce serve as gateways to a world that continues to preserve the atmosphere of a true “hidden treasure”.
