High-altitude mountain crossing via Priečné Saddle

This challenging all-day hike begins at Skalnaté Pleso at an elevation of 1,751 meters above sea level, which you can reach by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica. Following the red-marked Tatra Main Trail, the route continues across the mountain slopes to Zamkovský Chalet and from there ascends through Malá Studená Valley to Téryho Chalet at an elevation of 2,015 meters above sea level. The chalet stands near the Five Spiš Lakes, surrounded by rocky peaks.

Beyond Téry’s Chalet, the trail continues through rocky alpine terrain to Priečné Saddle. The most challenging section is exposed and secured with chains; alternatively, it can be traversed via a one-way via ferrata. From the saddle, the route descends around the lakes of the Veľká Studená Valley toward Zbojnícka Chalet and then follows a long, rocky trail toward Hrebienok. This hike is intended for experienced hikers who are in good physical condition, have a sure footing, and do not suffer from a significant fear of heights.

Difficulty of the route

The label “easy” is not appropriate for this route. The crossing of Priečné sedlo is a challenging all-day hike with exposed rocky terrain and chains. It is suitable for experienced high-altitude hikers, but generally not for seniors.

Seasonal Closure

The yellow-marked trail from Téry’s Hut through Priečné Pass to Zbojnícka Hut is closed annually from November 1 through May 31. The access trails to the huts themselves remain open, but the entire crossing of the pass cannot be completed during the closure.

Chains or via ferrata

The classic hiking trail across Priečné Saddle is secured with chains, and it is possible to traverse it in both directions. The parallel via ferrata, rated A for difficulty, is one-way and leads from Malá Studená Valley, starting at Téryho Chata, toward Veľká Studená Valley.

From a mountain lake through two Tatra valleys

The trail begins at Skalnaté Pleso at an elevation of 1,751 m above sea level and initially descends along the Tatra Main Trail toward Zamkovský Chalet. From there, the route changes direction and follows a long ascent through Malá Studená Valley along rocky trails and switchbacks to Téry’s Chalet.

From Téryho Chalet, the high-mountain section continues around the Five Spiš Lakes and across rocky scree below Priečné Saddle. The ascent to the saddle is the most technically challenging part of the hike. Once you’ve cleared it, a steeper descent into the Veľká Studená Valley follows, passing several mountain lakes, and a long descent from Zbojnícka Chalet all the way to Hrebienok.

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the High Tatras region.

Once in a while, we'll send you the best.

The High Tatras have something to offer all year round. The best time for high-altitude hiking is from June to October, when the hiking trails at higher elevations are open. Fall brings more stable weather, pleasant temperatures, and beautiful views. Winter is ideal for skiing, winter walks, and visiting locations that are accessible year-round. Before setting out on a trip, always check the current weather conditions and any trail closures.

You do not need a special permit for regular hiking on marked trails. However, you must comply with TANAP’s visitor regulations and seasonal closures, and you may only hike on open trails. Special rules apply, for example, to rock climbing, ski mountaineering, hiking off marked trails, or bringing a dog into the park.

You can easily reach the main Tatra resorts by train. The Tatra Electric Railways connect Poprad, Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso, and Tatranská Lomnica. A cog railway runs from Štrba to Štrbské Pleso. You can also take advantage of regular bus routes and seasonal shuttle services in the region.

You can park in designated parking lots in the various Tatra villages. During peak periods, we recommend using the P+R park-and-ride lot at Eurocamp in Tatranská Lomnica and continuing by shuttle bus. From this parking lot, you can take public transportation to destinations such as Tatranská Lomnica, Tatranské Matliare, Biela Voda, or the Belianska Cave.

For hiking, choose sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles that stabilize your feet and protect them on rocky or wet terrain. Your gear should also include weather-appropriate clothing and a rain jacket. Sandals and regular city shoes are not suitable for more demanding hikes.

When a storm is approaching, leave peaks, ridges, saddles, mountain passes, and open areas as soon as possible. Descend to lower elevations, avoid standing near isolated trees or metal objects, and keep your distance from other members of your group. If possible, take shelter in a mountain hut or a safe building. The best prevention is to check the weather forecast, set out early in the morning, and shorten or cancel your hike in a timely manner if conditions take a turn for the worse. Safety must take precedence over reaching your destination.
