From the mountain panoramas back to Štrbské Pleso

The trip begins at the upper station of the Solisko Express chairlift, where visitors are transported from Štrbské Pleso. During the approximately seven-minute ride, the chairlift climbs 431 meters. Right at the upper station, views open up of Štrbské Pleso, Kriváň, the Furkotská Valley, and the surrounding Tatra peaks. Nearby is the Chata pod Soliskom mountain hut, where you can grab a bite to eat before heading down.

From the chalet, the trail descends briefly to the Rázcestie pod Soliskom junction and then continues through the Furkotská Valley. The rocky mountain trail gradually gives way to forest terrain and, at the Rázcestie pod Furkotskou dolinou junction, joins the red-marked Tatra Main Trail. The final section leads along an easier trail back to Štrbské Pleso.

Start at an elevation of 1,814 meters above sea level.

Solisko is not a peak

The hike begins at the upper station of the Solisko Express chairlift, at an elevation of approximately 1,814 meters above sea level. The route does not start at the summit of Predné Solisko, at an elevation of 2,093 meters above sea level. Climbing to the summit itself would make the hike longer and more challenging.

Seasonal Closure

The yellow-marked trail through the Furkotská Valley—from the junction below the Furkotská Valley through the Škutnasta clearing and the connecting blue section to the Chata pod Soliskom mountain hut—is closed annually from November 1 through May 31. The entire route can therefore be hiked from June 1 through October 31, unless other restrictions are announced.

A route that is mostly downhill

The "easy" rating is based primarily on the use of the cable car and the predominantly downhill terrain. However, the trail consists of rocks, roots, and, in some places, stone steps. The longer descent can be hard on the knees, so hiking poles may be helpful.

From open mountain terrain to the Tatra forests

The trail begins at Chata pod Soliskom and the upper station of the cable car. Following the blue hiking trail, it leads down a short, rocky descent to Rázcestie pod Soliskom, also known as Škutnastá poľana. From there, it continues along the yellow trail through the Furkotská Valley. At first, it passes through more open mountain terrain; later, it enters a zone of dwarf pine and forest.

At the crossroads below the Furkotská Valley, the trail joins the red-marked Tatra Main Trail. The final section is gentler and follows a forest trail toward the shore of Štrbské Pleso. The total descent is approximately 470 meters in elevation.

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the High Tatras region.

The Tatras directly to your inbox

Once in a while, we'll send you the best.

The High Tatras have something to offer all year round. The best time for high-altitude hiking is from June to October, when the hiking trails at higher elevations are open. Fall brings more stable weather, pleasant temperatures, and beautiful views. Winter is ideal for skiing, winter walks, and visiting locations that are accessible year-round. Before setting out on a trip, always check the current weather conditions and any trail closures.

You do not need a special permit for regular hiking on marked trails. However, you must comply with TANAP’s visitor regulations and seasonal closures, and you may only hike on open trails. Special rules apply, for example, to rock climbing, ski mountaineering, hiking off marked trails, or bringing a dog into the park.

You can easily reach the main Tatra resorts by train. The Tatra Electric Railways connect Poprad, Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso, and Tatranská Lomnica. A cog railway runs from Štrba to Štrbské Pleso. You can also take advantage of regular bus routes and seasonal shuttle services in the region.

You can park in designated parking lots in the various Tatra villages. During peak periods, we recommend using the P+R park-and-ride lot at Eurocamp in Tatranská Lomnica and continuing by shuttle bus. From this parking lot, you can take public transportation to destinations such as Tatranská Lomnica, Tatranské Matliare, Biela Voda, or the Belianska Cave.

For hiking, choose sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles that stabilize your feet and protect them on rocky or wet terrain. Your gear should also include weather-appropriate clothing and a rain jacket. Sandals and regular city shoes are not suitable for more demanding hikes.

When a storm is approaching, leave peaks, ridges, saddles, mountain passes, and open areas as soon as possible. Descend to lower elevations, avoid standing near isolated trees or metal objects, and keep your distance from other members of your group. If possible, take shelter in a mountain hut or a safe building. The best prevention is to check the weather forecast, set out early in the morning, and shorten or cancel your hike in a timely manner if conditions take a turn for the worse. Safety must take precedence over reaching your destination.
